Nutrition, Family and Consumer Sciences

Families are the most basic unit of society and play a significant impact in defining our culture. They deal with many issues and often simultaneously, creating tremendous challenges. Our goal is to strengthen families in the midst of its many challenges and stages of life. Over the last six months, the majority of our programmatic focus has been on human nutrition. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show chronic diseases such as arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and oral diseases account for 7 or every 10 deaths in America and for more than 60% of medical care expenses. We are currently participating in "Shasta CAN", a community coalition focusing on activity and nutrition, working with school staff to identify factors contributing to obesity in our youth, possible solutions and available resources. Working with parents, teachers, students and other interested parties we hope to implement educational programs and promote policies that favor a healthier school environment through the Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program.
