Campaign, Network for a Healthy California-Sierra Cascade Region, Physical Activity and Nutrition Team, Shasta County Health and Human Services-Public Health, Shasta County Office of Education, Shasta Head Start, UC Cooperative Extension and other community members.

Structure: Shasta CAN and its Steering Committee hold quarterly meetings at the American Cancer Society 3290 Bechelli Lane, Redding, CA 96002 and UCCE/FSNEP 2030 Hartnell Avenue #A, Redding, CA 96002.  Project committees meet as needed to plan events, including National Nutrition Month Lean-N-Green Events (March); Spring into Health (April); Latino Fair (September) and Healthy Shasta Event and Wellness Challenge (October).

History: Shasta CAN’s roots began in 1997 with a group of local dietitians who met to work on projects for National Nutrition Month and soon discovered a need for a long-term coalition to promote nutrition in the community year round and to expand the focus to include physical activity.  Thus, Shasta CAN was formed in 1999.

Through Shasta CAN, agencies collaborate to maximize resources and avoid duplication.  Coordinating key special events is at the heart of what Shasta CAN does.  Shasta CAN also works to promote environments supportive of good nutrition and physical activity through advocacy and policy change.

Funding: Shasta CAN is an all-volunteer organization. We are supported by the enthusiasm and energy of our volunteers, donations from the community and in-kind contributions from member agencies.  Some specific projects are funded by participating organizations as appropriate, per their grant-funded goals and scope of work.

GOAL: Achieve our mission through balanced pursuit of the six levels in the Spectrum of Prevention.

1.  Support Local Nutrition and Physical Activity education

Programs that strengthen Individual Knowledge and Skills.

2.  Participate in community events promoting physical activity and

     nutrition.

3.   Educate parents, teachers, childcare providers, sport leaders,

coaches and other providers that influence others about positive

      food choices and physical activity.

4.   Support local community network development for nutrition and

       physical activity.

5.   Support local organizational changes regarding positive food

choices and physical activity in school systems, work places and

      other organizational settings.

and physical  activity policy development efforts.

Shasta CAN members support community health fairs and are happy to try to help find speakers on healthy lifestyle topics to speak at your business or organization.
